WHAT IS PROFESSIONAL BEHAVIOUR

By: Yamini Jayabalan (Sidang Aspirasi)

Most people would probably find it easier to tell you what being unprofessional is, giving examples of unprofessional people they have dealt with in the past. However, it is much easier and more positive to know what to do than not to do. There are eight important keys for being a true professional that are through communication, compliance, cognizance, character, commitment, comfort, conduct and completion. The important key to being a true professional cover 30 concepts, such as being responsible and accountable, developing respect, doing what is right, and learning how to project a professional image.

1.      Be Passionate - this means being interested in what you’re doing. Do something you have a great opportunity to LOVE.

2.      Be Eager - you are internally driven to make your organization a success and with it, yourself.
3.      Be a sponge - be a lifelong learner. Always be learning. Always be growing. Seek ways to do so.

4.      Get better on nights and weekends - it means constant improvement. And if you want to make more, do more, then that means you hone your skills on nights and weekends

5.      Everybody starts somewhere - everybody starts somewhere and typically that’s at the bottom of the ladder

6.      Be the solution - be someone who sees a problem and owns the solution.

7.      Be flexible - be willing to adapt and change if needed

8.      Be helpful - it means helping someone else with their problem.

9.      Be on time - show up on time, every time, and even before time.

10.  Find out how you fit in, quickly - find your place, quickly. Discover your unique role in your organization and what you can contribute to it

11.  Show up, work hard and you’ll standout - do your best, every day and people will take notice

12.  You’re not a rockstar - be the opposite of a rockstar … be a team player

*All professionals need to take responsibility for themselves and their work.
*A professional can see beyond him or herself and is willing to share.
*Essentially, being professional is about seeing beyond the immediate needs.
